Online Gaming Technology Stock Continues with Strong Revenue ...

Online Gaming Technology StockThere are many different avenues to look at when one is searching for technology stocks to invest in. One of the most basic differences is in hardware technology stocks versus software technology stocks. Obviously, some companies offer a combination of both, but for some of the smaller technology stocks, it can be advantageous to be solely on the software side of the business. This is because, as adoption by consumers grows, corporate earnings are easier to scale up.

One market that is extremely attractive, yet investors are hesitant to be active in these days, is that of Chinese technology stocks. American investors are hesitant to look at Chinese technology stocks because of questionable accounting practices. Unfortunately, there have been some unethical firms that have put the whole sector in question. No matter how one might categorize companies in China, no one questions the massive potential growth for corporate earnings in that nation.

Giant Interactive Group Inc. (NYSE/GA) is one of the more interesting technology stocks, because it is one of the leading developers for online games in China. The company specializes in multiplayer online games to drive corporate earnings.

The company reported third-quarter 2012 financial results in which revenue was $86.4 million, up 18.6% from the same quarter in 2011. Corporate earnings on a non-GAAP basis were $54.5 million, up 20.2% from the corporate earnings earned during the same quarter in 2011. (Source: ?Giant Interactive Announces Third Quarter 2012 Results,? Giant Interactive Group Inc., November 13, 2012, accessed December 15, 2012.)

This is a stock that is trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of only 5.8, a significant value compared to its growth margin. Profit margin of almost 56%, return on equity of 46.25%, no debt and $1.58 of cash per share. (Source: Yahoo! Finance, accessed December 15, 2012.)

These are great increases, as they show underlying strength in the actual games themselves. If players don?t like the products offered, they would certainly play less. That?s not what the company?s results show; in fact, it?s just the opposite.

Giant Interactive Group Inc Chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

With the valuation still attractive and corporate earnings continuing to grow along with revenue, the stock remains in a bullish channel. Stock price remains above its 200-day moving average, although recent days have seen some sellers enter the market. This could be due to concerns regarding Chinese technology stocks in general, not specific to this one company.

With technology stocks being a highly competitive market sector, the key to corporate earnings growth is developing a product in which customers continually want more of the product, and are willing to spend money on it.

The only question might be the long-term viability of technology stocks that develop such products as online games. The reason being is that competition is intense, which means corporate earnings growth can be affected through new product offerings by other technology stocks and price competition. Only time will tell. However, no one questions the appetite for online games in China.

Health: New Tool To Detect Breast Cancer Arrives In Our Area ...

By Stephanie Stahl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? New technology is making it easier for doctors to detect breast cancer. And a facility in South Jersey is among the first of ten in the country to make it available to patients. 3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl has more on the new screening tool.

This may look like your typical mammogram, but the pictures it can provide are not the same.

?You always wonder ya know statistically are you going to be that one person that?s going to have cancer,? said Mary Campellone, of Mt. Laurel. She has dense breasts which makes it harder for doctors to spot cancer on standard mammography. She had a suspicious mammogram, so they recommended she get a new FDA approved SenoBright Mammogram at Cooper University?s Breast Imaging Center.

?It offered me peace of mind. The test was actually read while I was here,? said Mary.

This machine holds special contrast dye that?s injected into patients through an IV. Then patients get a standard mammogram.

?This is a technology that can identify abnormalities based on blood flow,? said Dr. Kristin Brill, Director of Breast Surgery with Cooper University Health Care.

The contrast dye lights up areas with increased blood flow that may be cancerous. Doctors say this can almost immediately eliminate patients who don?t need further testing, including biopsies.

?It may add to our ability to identify cancers particularly women who are difficult to image, that would be the younger, with dense breast tissue. Um it may give us some alternative to MRI,? said Dr. Brill.

For Mary, the new imaging told doctors she needed more testing, including a biopsy.

?Everything was benign, and I?m very, very happy about that. Big, big relief,? said Mary.

Doctors say the test is quick, about 15 minutes, and results are given to the patients at that visit, cutting the patient wait time from detection to diagnosis.

Adam Lanza Taking Antipsychotics - Business Insider

By now the whole country is fully embroiled in the Gun Control debate, spurred by the grisly murder of 27 people, mostly kids, at the Sandy Hook Elementary school last Friday.

Guns might not be the only problem though.

New York Magazine wrote a piece about shooter Adam Lanza's supposed "aspergers" syndrome as a "red herring" meant to distract from the real problem (guns, of course, the subject goes without mentioning).

Inside the piece though they report Adam Lanza's uncle said the boy was prescribed Fanapt, a controversial anti-psychotic medicine.

Fanapt was the subject of a Bloomberg report when it passed regulators, after previously getting the "nonapproval" stamp. Why wasn't it approved, you might ask?

There are many reasons, some of which have to do with competing entities in a competitive market.

The main cited reason for the rejection was that it caused severe heart problems in enough patients to cause a stir.

Maybe more importantly, though, Fanapt is one of a many drugs the FDA pumped out with an ability to exact the opposite desired effect on people: that is, you know, inducing rather than inhibiting psychosis and aggressive behavior.

From Drugs.com, side effects of the drug Fanapt:

Psychiatric

Psychiatric side effects including restlessness, aggression, and delusion have been reported frequently. Hostility, decreased libido, paranoia, anorgasmia, confusional state, mania, catatonia, mood swings, panic attack, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, delirium, polydipsia psychogenic, impulse-control disorder, and major depression have been reported infrequently.

In fact, Fanapt was dropped by its first producer, picked up by another, initially rejected by the FDA, then later picked up and mass produced. The adverse side-effect is said to be "infrequent," but still it exists, and can't be ignored.

The reaction invoked by the drug in some people is reminiscent of the Jeffrey R. MacDonald case, where a Green Beret slaughtered his entire family and then fabricated a story about a marauding troop of "hopped up hippies".

MacDonald though, had Eskatrol in his system, a weight-loss amphetamine that's since been banned in part for its side effects of psychotic behavior and aggression.

These drugs are not the only ones that can cause the opposite of their desired effect. Several anti-depressant medications are also restricted to adults, for the depression they inspire in kids rather than eliminate.?

Emergency Fund for Freelancing Web Designing

Freelancers of the modern days are quite impulsive and risk-takers. Most of them like to set out on our own and often crave excitement. But little do they understand that there is a difference between excitement and practical aspects of life. Signing the first contract with a client or just by creating the first design as a freelancer, however tempting may be but it really cannot make you a businessman. Before jumping into any conclusion one thing you should have before you start is an emergency fund.

It?s very important to understand what an emergency fund is. It is a kind of savings account with enough money to cover your living expenses for a minimum of 3 months. It is a cash account that you can access without penalty.

An emergency fund is essential and which is like a boon during an emergency. It provides security and some peace of mind during the start up of your business.? You?re doing not become dependent on the vagaries of your clients and you can use that security intelligently during the time of negotiation with your clients which will ultimately give you better deals for your business.? It is basically a state of mind After all, if you know you have enough money to not work for 3 months, you can be choosy about projects, clients and money.? This emergency fund allows you to understand every client and every job offer and their real worth.

Setting up an Emergency Fund

?The Major things you will need:

? ?A bank account - preferably one which online only and doesn't come with ATM card or check book facilities. As your main aim will be saving the money and not to withdraw the money whenever you need it.

? ?Save at least 3-6 months of expenses.

It is totally up to you to decide till how many months? savings is enough for you.
?
Suggestions for Saving the Money

T here is a few ways you can save the money:

? ?Give up your indulgence for 1 month and save the money that you would have spent for your emergency fund.

? ?At the end of that month, check for yourself how much you have saved by giving up all or some of your indulgences.

? ?If you can't leave them completely, find a cheaper alternative for all those things.

? ?Try to get a better rate on your credit cards. If you get an offer for a lower interest rate than you're currently paying on your card you can save it.

? ?Make a meal plan and stick to it. If you can properly plan your meals for the week then not only you will get healthier food, but you will be able to save money.

The Keys to a Good Emergency Fund

? ?Depositing money is easy, but somewhat harder to get money out of.

? ?The fund is cash; you can access it immediately without penalty during emergency.

? ?It's in a savings account so that you can earn some interest.

? ?It has an automatic deposit set up, so that you're always saving at least a small amount.

? ?Ultimately you have enough money and you are feeling secure.

No. 2 Alabama steamrolls Auburn 49-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) ? Alabama left no doubt it's tops in the state.

Proving it's the best team in the Southeastern Conference and perhaps the nation won't be nearly so easy.

AJ McCarron passed for four touchdowns and Eddie Lacy rushed for 131 yards and two scores to lead the second-ranked Crimson Tide to a 49-0 beatdown of rival Auburn on Saturday, the most lopsided Iron Bowl in 64 years.

The Tide (10-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) clinched the Western Division title outright and a spot in the conference title game against No. 3 Georgia with the winner likely getting a BCS national championship shot.

"To me, in all those games that I've been a part of, they are about as good as any game in the country other than the national championship game," Alabama coach Nick Saban said of the SEC title matchup.

Georgia will certainly present a tougher challenge the Tide faced Saturday.

Auburn (3-9, 0-8) completed the worst season for any team within two years of winning an Associated Press national title in what might have been the last game for embattled coach Gene Chizik.

University President Jay Gogue has only said he'll evaluate the program at season's end.

Chizik met Saban briefly at midfield, hugged McCarron, and walked off the field with cameras following his every move. He declined to discuss his future afterward.

"I'm not going to go into all of the job situation with any questions," he said. "This isn't about me. I've got a locker room of guys that are here that are very disappointed. That's my focus, I'm not going to entertain any of those questions. My focus is to be back in there with them."

Chizak said the Tigers' performance was "sad."

"Obviously that was a very disappointing loss, embarrassing loss to our state rivals," he said. "It was obvious to everybody.

"The Auburn fans, the Auburn alumni, don't deserve that."

And most haven't seen a game like this one. The biggest Iron Bowl margin was Alabama's 55-0 victory in 1948, the most lopsided in a rivalry that captivates a state.

This one could have topped that but Saban played subs for much of the second half. The Tide lost a fumble inside Auburn's 10 and then ran out the final seconds after getting to the 5.

Alabama outgained the Tigers 483-163 and had 25 first downs to Auburn's seven.

"We didn't take our foot off the gas," Lacy said. "We kept playing in the fourth quarter."

Auburn hasn't scored an offensive touchdown in the last two meetings since Cam Newton & Co. completed the rivalry's largest comeback in the Tigers' last visit to Bryant-Denny Stadium two years ago. This one supplied another milestone of sorts.

It's the first time Alabama has scored 40-plus points in two straight Iron Bowls, following last season's 42-14 win when Auburn managed to score on a kick return and fumble recovery.

The 42-0 halftime score was the same as the Tide had last week against FCS team Western Carolina, which finished 1-10. The previous largest halftime margin in the Iron Bowl was 34-0 by Auburn in 1957 in a 40-0 win during its only national title run before 2010.

"We had that sick feeling in our mouth," offensive lineman Chad Slade said. "You know, you hate to feel that way. I lost it last year, and I lose it this year. It's hard, it's real hard just to speak on it. Next year has to be a different story."

McCarron completed 15 of 21 passes for 216 yards in 2-1/2 quarters, including a pair of touchdowns apiece to Amari Cooper and Kevin Norwood.

Lacy ran 18 times for 131 yards, pinballing off defenders from a defense that ranks last in the SEC against the run.

Auburn freshman Jonathan Wallace completed 5 of 14 passes with two interceptions against the nation's top scoring defense. He's only the third freshman quarterback to start an Iron Bowl for the Tigers and first since Gabe Gross in 1998.

Wallace voiced his support for Chizik.

"He should be back. I definitely love coach Chizik and the whole coaching staff," he said. "They know exactly where this program needs to go, and they know what to do. I hope they are back next year. I really have no doubt. I really do believe they will be."

Tre Mason ran 21 times for 82 yards for Auburn, topping 1,000 for the season on the game's final play.

The Tide produced an array of big plays running and passing. McCarron and Cooper ? who had five catches for 109 yards ? connected for touchdowns of 37 and 29 yards. Norwood scored on a 7-yarder and a 38-yarder that completed the scoring with 24 minutes left.

Alabama produced touchdowns on its first seven possessions until a fumble deep in Auburn territory ended that streak.

The Tide also converted its first 11 third-down tries.

The worst news for Alabama was on the injury front. Saban said wide receiver Kenny Bell sustained a broken left leg and will have to have a rod inserted.

Auburn only pushed the ball across midfield only twice, making it as far as the Tide's 41 in the first quarter before punting. The Tigers have been outscored by 129 points in their last three SEC games, all against Top 10 SEC opponents Texas A&M, Georgia and Alabama.

The Tide shut out four opponents this season, the most in a season for Alabama since 1979. Last season's team also shut out LSU in the BCS title game in January.

"This was a great team victory," Saban said. "Everybody contributed. We asked for everyone to play their best game today. When you make a commitment to something, it comes from the heart, and I really thought our players did that."

Store wars: Wal-Mart, Target or Kmart?

Target is getting more aggressive with price matching this holiday.

By Raechel Conover, Cheapism.com

In the perennial war among discount superstores Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart for shoppers' dollars, the edge goes to the retailer with the best and the most bargains. Cheapism found that Wal-Mart scores a clear win with the cheapest prices and largest selection and holds its own in other realms that frugal and savvy customers consider important -- convenience, a pleasant shopping environment, and products they consider a good value. Target is pressing in from a position of strength and Kmart, once the biggest of the three, no longer competes in any aspect we considered important.

For this in-depth comparison of Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart, in the 50th anniversary year for each, Cheapism took a multi-pronged approach. We sent a researcher into each store to check prices and evaluate the shopping experience. We also conducted consumer and expert interviews, fielded a Facebook poll, and analyzed online reviews.

By the Numbers
On price alone, Wal-Mart leads the pack. When we totaled up a shopping cart of 30 identical and like items, including clothing, electronics, groceries, health and beauty supplies, home goods, and toys, the bill came to $1,776.15 at Wal-Mart, $1,866.10 at Target, and $2,092.82 at Kmart. What's more, Wal-Mart's price-matching policy doesn't require consumers to show a competitor's print ad in order to pay a lower price. Target is upping the ante this holiday season, however, by extending its own guarantee to online prices from Nov. 1 to Dec. 16.

Price Isn't Everything
While its prices are modestly higher on many items, "Tar-zhay" enjoys a reputation for relative quality and attention to design, particularly in areas such as apparel and home goods. Consumers gravitate to Target's clothing lines for their fashionable styling and durability. A Facebook poll respondent extols the retailer's other store brands, saying that the Up & Up baby products, for example, parallel pricier name brands. Wal-Mart carries a more basic selection of clothing, including heavy work clothes such as coveralls and thermal flannel shirts. Kmart showcases a couple of celebrity lines, but its offerings didn't register with the sources we queried.

Wal-Mart and Target appear to field plenty of employees on the shopping floor who were almost uniformly friendly and accommodating during our site visits. Kmart, by contrast, seemed woefully understaffed and the few employees present weren't all that willing to help out. One irritant common to all three discount retailers: long waits and other problems at checkout. We found that too few lanes were open to handle the crush of shoppers and numerous consumers posted negative experiences on our Facebook page.

The atmosphere varies by location, of course, but generally shoppers perceive Target as well-organized, tidy, and calm. Wal-Mart strikes some consumers as frenzied and crowded, a tad overwhelming, and occasionally in need of a quick cleanup, according to our research. Kmart disappoints with understocked shelves, messy displays, poor signage, and generally scruffy facilities.

From Florida to California, Black Friday fever has taken hold earlier than ever as dedicated shoppers camp out in front of major retailers, several of which are expected to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day. NBC's Diana Alvear reports.

Goods and Services
All three retailers stock a variety of products in numerous departments, from foodstuffs to office supplies to jewelry and more. For the most part, Target and especially Wal-Mart have become one-stop-shopping destinations. With thousands of stores scattered about the country, they are within convenient reach of many consumers. Target is expanding the grocery offerings in more than 200 stores this year but still has a ways to go to catch up with Wal-Mart, which includes full-service grocery departments complete with bakeries and delis in its 3,000 Wal-Mart Supercenters. Kmart stocks a more limited assortment of products -- particularly groceries -- in addition to charging higher prices.

Pharmacies at all three retailers' locations sell generic medications at low prices, although Kmart levies a $10 annual fee to obtain low-cost prescriptions. Some Target stores and many Wal-Mart locations contain health clinics and vision centers, as well. Kmart's health services don't extend much farther than flu shots and periodic "health events" such as blood pressure checks.

Wal-Mart and Target both feature photo processing. Wal-Mart provides the greatest variety of financial services, but all three retailers issue credit and/or debit cards. We found that an offer of 5% savings on all purchases and free shipping for online orders has made Target's REDcards a consumer favorite. Kmart stands out only for its well-known layaway program, for which it's waiving the service fee through Nov. 21. Wal-Mart supports the layaway option, as well, but only during the holiday shopping season.

The three stores also maintain extensive online inventories, and Wal-Mart's website includes a marketplace for third-party sellers. Wal-Mart.com offers free shipping to a local store and some items qualify for free home delivery if the order exceeds $45. Eligible items at Target must total $50 for free shipping. Kmart offers a fee-based membership for frequent shoppers that comes with free shipping on many items. In online reviews, consumers cite shipping-related problems with all three retailers.

Ranking the Discount Retailers
What factored into Cheapism's final verdict:

1. Wal-Mart

  • Lowest prices, generous ad-matching policy
  • Thousands of Supercenters with vast inventory, especially in grocery
  • User-friendly website with myriad offerings and free Site to Store shipping
  • Full selection of services, including photo developing, portrait studio, health clinics, vision centers, and holiday-season layaway

2. Target

  • Fashionable clothing and home goods, reputation for quality
  • Modest prices
  • Clean stores with well-organized displays and helpful employees
  • Calm atmosphere that makes for easy shopping

3. Kmart

  • Highest prices
  • Limited selection, especially in grocery
  • Disgruntled and unavailable employees
  • Empty shelves and unkempt displays

Amid the seemingly endless debates today about the future of reading, there remains one salient, yet often overlooked fact: Reading isn?t only a matter of our brains; it?s something that we do with our bodies. Reading is an integral part of our lived experience, our sense of being in the world, even if at times this can mean feeling intensely apart from it. How we hold our reading materials, how we look at them, navigate them, take notes on them, share them, play with them, even where we read them?these are the categories that have mattered most to us as readers throughout the long and varied history of reading. They will no doubt continue to do so into the future.

Understanding reading at this most elementary level?at the level of person, habit, and gesture?will be essential as we continue to make choices about the kind of reading we care about and the kind of technologies that will best embody those values. To think about the future of reading means, then, to think about the long history of how touch has shaped reading and, by extension, our sense of ourselves while we read.

The significance of the tactility of reading could begin with St. Augustine. In the eighth book of his Confessions, Augustine describes the moment of his conversion to becoming a Christian:

In my misery I kept crying, ?How long shall I go on saying, ?tomorrow, tomorrow?? ? Why not now? Why not make an end of my ugly sins at this very moment? I was asking myself these questions when all at once I heard the singing voice of a child in a nearby house. Whether it was the voice of a boy or girl I cannot say, but again and again it repeated the refrain, ?Take it and read, take it read.?

Augustine is sitting beneath a fig tree in his garden, and upon hearing the voice he takes up the Bible lying near him and opens a passage at random and begins reading (Romans 13:13-14). At this moment, he tells us, ?I had no wish to read more and no need to do so. For in an instant, as I came to the end of the sentence, it was as though the light of confidence flooded into my heart and all the darkness of doubt was dispelled.? Augustine closes the book, marking his place with his finger, and goes to tell his friend Alypius about his experience. His conversion is complete.

No other passage has more profoundly captured the meaning of the book than this one. Not just reading but reading books was aligned in Augustine with the act of personal conversion. Augustine was writing at the end of the fourth century, when the codex had largely superseded the scroll as the most prevalent form of reading material. We know Augustine was reading a book from the way he randomly accesses a page and uses his finger to mark his place. The conversion at the heart of The Confessions was an affirmation of the new technology of the book within the lives of individuals, indeed, as the technology that helped turn readers into individuals. Turning the page, not turning the handle of the scroll, was the new technical prelude to undergoing a major turn in one?s own life.

In aligning the practice of book reading with that of personal conversion, Augustine established a paradigm of reading that would far exceed its theological framework, one that would go on to become a foundation of Western humanistic learning for the next 1,500 years. It was above all else the graspability of the book, its being ?at hand,? that allowed it to play such a pivotal role in shaping one?s life. ?Take it and read, take it and read? (tolle lege, tolle lege), repeats the divine refrain. The book?s graspability, in a material as well as a spiritual sense, is what endowed it with such immense power to radically alter our lives. In taking hold of the book, according to Augustine, we are taken hold of by books.

Nothing is more suspect today than the book?s continued identity of being ?at hand.? The spines, gatherings, threads, boards, and folds that once gave a book its shapeliness, that fit it to our hands, are being supplanted by the increasingly fine strata of new reading devices, integrated into vast woven systems of connection. If books are essentially vertebral, contributing to our sense of human uniqueness that depends upon bodily uprightness, digital texts are more like invertebrates, subject to the laws of horizontal gene transfer and nonlocal regeneration. Like jellyfish or hydra polyps, they always elude our grasp in some fundamental sense. What this means for how we read?and how we are taken hold of by what we read?is still far from clear.

Aristotle regarded touch as the most elementary sense. It is how we begin to make our way in the world, to map it, measure it, and make sense of it. Touch is the most self-reflexive of senses, an insight affirmed by the German researcher David Katz, who established the field of touch studies in the early 20th century based on his work with World War I amputees. Through the feeling of touch, we learn to feel ourselves. Touch is a form of redundancy, enfolding more sensory information into what we see and therefore what we read. It makes the words on the page richer in meaning and more multidimensional. It gives words a geometry.

After completing his early masterpiece Dante and Virgil, the great French romantic painter Eug?ne Delacroix wrote in his journal, ?What I must chiefly remember are the hands.? As Delacroix said of painting, so too of reading.

Books, like hands, hold our attention. As early as the 12th century, writers began drawing hands in the margins of their books to point to important passages. Such a device gradually passed into typescript and became a commonplace of printed books. It looked like this: ?. The pointing hand in the book stood for the way books themselves were like pointers, making the world graspable. If books open us out into the world, they also constrain. They bring the world down to size, inoculations against the problem of patternlessness.

Tag Your Pet The Santa Barbara Independent

Even though National Tag Your Pet Day is a few months away, it?s not too early to start thinking of ways to identify your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study, about one million stray dogs and half a million stray cats are turned in to animal shelters across the nation each year. Unfortunately, less than 15 percent of those dogs and a measly 2 percent of those cats are ever reunited with their owners. Why is this number so low? One of the reasons could be that owners fail to properly identify their pets. These new products on the market make it easy to keep your pet?located:

PetFINDER ID Tag. Before placing the petFINDER tag on their pet, owners call a number and record a personal message about the animal, including its name, health/dietary/behavioral issues, and any other relevant information. They then register three contact numbers where they can be reached if their pet is found. Anyone who finds a lost pet with one of these tags on will see the toll-free number on the tag and can call to hear the message and be automatically connected to the phone numbers listed. You can make instant and unlimited changes to the contact numbers from any telephone even after the pet is lost or if you discover the previous numbers do not reflect where you can now be reached. This system reunited many pets with their owners who were evacuated after Hurricane Katrina. The cost is $12. For more information, visit amazon.com/Pet-Finder.

Zoombak Advanced GPS Dog Locator. This system uses GPS technology to track the family pet. The pet owner sets up his safety zones, which defines the area that the pet should be. If the pet wanders outside of the preset limits, the pet owner will be alerted via email or text message. Up to 10 different safety zones can be created and turned off or on via the website Zoombak.com. Pet owners can be updated as to pet locations via email or text at intervals of five minutes up to every hour. Cost is $99.99 for the unit, plus $12.99 for monthly service fee. For more information, visit zoombak.com

Nite Ize Spotlit Pet. This product is a great addition to an identification tag for your pet. The Nite Ize Spotlit Pet tag is a stainless steel carabiner with LED lights that clips on to almost any type of collar and helps your pet be spotted in the dark. A lot of people who have purchased this product complain that the instructions on the package don?t tell you that in order for the light to stay on, you have to take it out of test mode by pressing and holding the light for about 10 seconds until it flashes. And then the light will stay on. Prices range from $6-$10. For more information, visit amazon.com/Nite-Ize

Flexi PC Pet ID Tag. The PCPetID is a portable PC storage device that is waterproof, weatherproof, and shock resistant. It requires no batteries or Internet connection and hangs from your pet?s collar just like any other identification tag. Separate forms are stored on the PCPetID, allowing you to enter as much or as little information as you feel comfortable providing. Just plug the PCPetID into any personal computer?s USB port, and you can enter your pet?s and your own information on short and simple to use Microsoft Word for Windows forms. Plus, unlike ID tags, you can change the information as often as necessary to keep it up-to-date. It is made of metal, so you can engrave additional information on the outside of the PCPetID if you choose. Price is $25. For more information, visit petco.com

Microchip. Even though microchipping has been around for many years, it might still be new to some. It involves the injection of a tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) just under your pet?s skin between the shoulder blades. The process of inserting a microchip is similar to when your pet receives a shot, and no anesthesia is necessary for implantation. Once in place, a microchip scanner can detect the microchip immediately. Microchips are said to last 20 years, so there is no need to remove or replace it during a pet?s lifetime. Although a microchip is a lifesaver, don?t rely on it as your pet?s only means of identification. While your area shelter may have a microchip scanner, your neighbor most likely doesn?t, so a collar with an identification tag is a great addition to the?microchip.

Local Animal Shelters That?Microchip

Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) microchips all of its adoptable cats at the shelter at no cost to the adopter. This registration is valid for the life of the cat. It is the responsibility of the adopter to keep contact information updated. For more information, visit asapcats.org

DAWG microchips all its dogs before they are adopted at no additional cost. Currently, as part of its pit bull spay/neuter program, the group offers free spaying and neutering to pit bulls and pit bull mixes, as well as vaccines and a microchip at the time of the surgery. The group can only do this if it is spaying or neutering the dog, so DAWG doesn?t offer chips or vaccines to pit bulls who are already spayed or neutered. For more information, visit sbdawg.org

K9 Pals offers free microchips for every adopted dog. For more information, visit k-9pals.org

Santa Barbara County Animal Services offers microchipping for dogs and cats for only $40. This includes registration fee. Fore more information, visit countyofsb.org

Santa Barbara Humane Society microchips all cats and dogs before they are adopted. The microchip is included in the price of the adoption. For more information, visit: sbhumanesociety.org

According to the American Humane Association, almost 4 million pets are euthanized every year because their owners aren?t found in time. If a shelter cannot determine a pet?s owner, the pet may be euthanized in as few as three days. Make sure your pets are properly identified so they can be returned home without becoming a?statistic!

Adoptable Pet of the?Week

Squirt

Squirt is a 4-month-old neutered male Chihuahua mix who only weighs seven pounds! He is a calm and confident dog who would do well in a household with other dogs or cats. He is an alpha dog and always thinks he?s in charge. He would do best with kids over 12 years old. Even though he struts his stuff, he?s a little sweetheart and loves to be carried?around.

If Squirt sounds like the perfect dog for you, stop by the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter, 5473 Overpass Road in Goleta and complete a no-obligation adoption?application.

Do you love dogs, but can?t have a pet? To donate or volunteer with K-9 PALS, the all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that pays for all the nonroutine medical expenses and prescription foods for the S.B. County shelter dogs, call (805) 570-0415 or link to K-9PALS.org

Verizon & Comcast Team Up - Zacks.com

Verizon Wireless ? a subsidiary of? Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ - Analyst Report) ? and Comcast Corporation (CMCSA - Analyst Report) have entered into an alliance to exchange wireless services in markets like Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Watsonville. These services would include a variety of offers and incentive packages pertaining to video, phone, Internet and wireless services.

These offers include Visa prepaid cards valued up to $300, Comcast HD DVR for six months and complimentary 12-month upgrade to Blast!, an Xfinity Internet service provided by Comcast.

The addition of Comcast services in Verizon markets is expected to boost the LTE services of Verizon. In turn, Compacts will benefit from the broad market base of Verizon, which would translate into more business for the former. Beyond the initial launch, both the companies expect to expand their combined services in other key markets including New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

With respect to Wireline business, Verizon is committed to improving long-term profitability through product streamlining and process simplification initiatives as well as cost management actions. Verizon expects the enterprise business to contribute more to wireline revenues and profits.

Additionally, Verizon is seeking new ways such as new pricing actions, FiOS Quantum, copper-to-fiber migration and cost-cutting measures to drive FiOS revenue growth and maximize profitability. The new FiOS pricing plans (set-top boxes and planned bundled changes) would accelerate consumer revenue growth for the next several quarters.

Further, Verizon entered into mobile video streaming market with the introduction of ?Viewdini? in May this year. The Viewdini allows searching for a particular title, topic, artist or keyword from a variety of the Web's leading content providers ? such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, mSpot, broadcaster and movie-studio websites, Verizon?s FiOS, Comcast Xfinity TV and other cable providers.

Apart from the agreement with Comcast, the company will also launch nationwide video rental and online streaming services in collaboration with Coinstar, Inc. (CSTR - Snapshot Report) in August this year. We believe the entrance into mobile video streaming is highly beneficial to Verizon, as it will attract new subscribers and add a new line of business, thereby drawing additional revenues.

We have a long-term Neutral recommendation on Verizon. The stock retains a Zacks #3 Rank, implying a short-term (1-3 months) Hold rating.

Robotic explorers may usher in lunar 'water rush'

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? The American space program stands at the cusp of a "water rush" to the moon by several companies developing robotic prospectors for launch in the near future, according to a NASA scientist considering how to acquire and use water ice believed to be at the poles of the moon.

"This is like the gold rush that led to the settlement of California," said Phil Metzger, a physicist who leads the Granular Mechanics and Regolith Operations Lab, part of Kennedy's Surface Systems Office. "This is the water rush."

Collecting the water, or at least showing it can be collected, is where the Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic Technology comes in. The small company signed on in April for the third phase of a Small Business Innovative Research deal that continues research work to develop technologies NASA may need to harvest space resources in the future.

The company already is far along in its development of a rover that will work on its own. There is a deal in place with SpaceX to launch a lander and rover on a Falcon 9 rocket in October 2015. Astrobotic is competing against several other companies for the Google Lunar X-Prize, an award worth up to $30 million funded by the Internet search engine company.

"Our intent is to land on the surface of the moon in October 2015 and find water," said John Thornton, president of Astrobotic.

Water already on asteroids, the moon or Martian moons represent a potential bonanza to NASA's exploration plans because the resource can be put to use in so many critical ways for astronauts venturing into deep space. Water, made of hydrogen and oxygen molecules, can be turned into everything from breathing air to rocket fuel, not to mention the chance to filter it clean and drink it.

"Using these resources is the key to making space travel and habitation affordable and sustainable -- we are starting to learn how to live on another planetary surface," said Rob Mueller, a senior technologist in Kennedy's Surface Systems Office.

"It's a really interesting resource when you start to think about how to explore beyond Earth and to use the resources that are already in our solar system," Thornton said. "This is the first step toward harnessing the resources in the solar system for exploration and sustained presence beyond Earth."

Not having to launch those resources from Earth would dramatically cut the price tag for exploration, plus lower the risks involved for the crews as they venture into deep space on missions to an asteroid or Mars.

"There have been studies that have shown you can reduce the mass of a mission to Mars by a factor of somewhere between three and five if you get propellants from the space environment rather than launching them all from Earth," Metzger said.

Thornton said the fact that a number of companies are developing plans and building machines to go to the moon shows that the potential is real.

"If we were doing something really big and no one else was trying to do it, then it might not be that big," Thornton said.

Apollo astronauts found no signs of water ice as they walked on the surface of the moon near the equator from 1969 to 1972, nor did the soil and rock samples they brought back to Earth. However, several probes within the last 15 years found one indication after another that frozen water not only exists on the moon, but is abundant.

"None of these have been ground-proofed yet," Metzger said. "We really need to get vehicles on the surface of the moon prospecting to characterize those deposits, like how do they vary spatially, how do they vary with depth?"

A big question now is whether water ice on the moon is a powder akin to what skiers experience on a mountainside or is it completely solid like an ice cube, or did water seep down between granules of soil and freeze to produce rocks as hard as granite. It wouldn't surprise lunar researchers to find cases of all three as robotic prospectors explore the surface.

"Our best guess is it's going to be the ice," Thornton said. "Probably small little pieces of ice mixed in with the regolith."

Of course, there's more to exploration than knowing what questions to ask. There's also the issue of inventing technology that allows a robotic landing cheaply enough that a private company can pay for it, developing a rover heavy enough to drill or dig into the moon's surface without lifting itself off the ground in the low gravity, not to mention the matter of keeping the rover warm and powered in areas of the moon that are shadowed and surviving the lunar night.

Metzger has been pleased with what he has seen from the company so far.

"They're doing excellent work, they're excavator is progressing well," Metzger said.

Thornton said exchanging a modular digging element on the rover for a drill and instruments was not particularly difficult, and is an option for prospecting on the moon.

"The excavation chassis is a perfect fit for a mission to the moon in terms of scale, mass and power. We took out the excavation part and dropped in a drill and instruments," Thornton said.

Astrobotic will test its rover and tools in the bin of simulated lunar soil that Kennedy uses for its annual Lunabotics Mining competition to prove the vehicle is up to the challenges of operating on the moon.

"You have to be able to go to the moon with some confidence that your vehicle's going to be able to get around and to dig in the soil," Thornton said.

While NASA is excited about the chances to use a new resource for deep space exploration, Astrobotic wants to use the robotic prospector to start mapping where the biggest water deposits are, along with other helpful chemicals, and then use the information to develop ways to extract the materials from the moon and put it to use. There are no plans to return water or other lunar samples to the Earth, Thornton said.

"The beauty of sending a robot is they don't demand a return ticket," Thornton said. "Once we know where the water is and what form it is in, we can develop systems to produce it in useable quantities. Water is a critical resource because you can drink it, breathe it and use it for rocket fuel."

There are a great many questions to answer before astronauts can count on the moon, an asteroid or Martian moons as fuel and air depots, but Metzger and Thornton said the answers are within reach.

"That's the reason to go, because we don't know the answer," Thornton said.

Dysfunctional Euro Finance Ministers Send Currency Traders To ...

By Ralph Shell: Once again the European Finance Ministers met to address the Greek debt situation. The ?31.5B tranche originally scheduled to provide bail-out funds in June has yet to be dispersed. While the hapless Greeks legislate more austerity, the debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to increase to 190% next year, well in excess of the 120% target set by the IMF.The problem is the IMF and EU austerity plans do not work. They shrink the economy. As a result, the Greece GDP is down 20/25% over the past four years, tax receipts have diminished, the debt remains and the economic death spiral continues.Clearly debt forgiveness is needed if Greece is to survive but the problem is private-sector debt has been written off, and all that remains is ECB, and IMF guaranteed debt. Neither ECB President Draghi nor IMF director Lagarde want to take the loss. Doling out another tranche of fundsComplete Story ?

GOP senators vow to block Rice nomination at State

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate Republicans sent the clearest message yet to President Barack Obama that he would have a second-term confirmation fight if he nominates U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of State.

"We will do whatever is necessary to block the nomination that's within our power as far as Susan Rice is concerned," Sen. John McCain, the top GOP senator on the Armed Services Committee, told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference.

Said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.: "I don't trust her."

The two lawmakers along with Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire are pressing for a special, Watergate-style select Senate committee to investigate the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. They complained that separate inquiries by various Senate panels will fail to get to the truth and a comprehensive probe "up to and including the president of the United States" was warranted.

They planned to introduce a resolution calling for the special committee on Wednesday afternoon. However, they face opposition from Democrats.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said a select committee is not necessary.

Pressed on reports that Obama is considering Rice for the top job at the State Department, the GOP lawmakers were withering in their criticism of her response to the Sept. 11 attack, citing her comments five days after the incident that it was the result of an angry response in the Arab world to an anti-Muslim video.

McCain said the information that Rice relayed on the Sunday talk shows was false and she should have known that it was a terrorist attack.

Graham argued that it makes no sense to promote "anybody who was an essential player in the Benghazi debacle." The lawmaker said he has not been impressed with her work at the United Nations, contending that Russia and China have ignored the United States.

Graham said Rice is more of a "political operative" than a candidate to be the nation's top diplomat.

Will Internet-Based Programming Render ... - Technology blog

Most homes in the United States have at least one television set in the living room or family room, and many also have TVs in the bedrooms, media rooms and even kitchen or basement. In fact, the average American home is estimated to have approximately three television sets in it. As popular as watching television is for entertainment, it is no longer the only viewing option available.

As Internet-based technology has advanced in recent years, online video is increasingly popular. Some have even ventured to say that Internet-based programming will render television sets obsolete in the coming years.

A Look At the Numbers
Before you make the decision to retire your television set in place of Internet-based programming, it may be helpful to take a closer look at the number of viewers who are still watching TV on their home's traditional TV set. ?TV ratings guru Neilsen has estimated that approximately 290 million people watch traditional television programming in the United States on a regular basis.

This is compared to approximately 145 million viewers who watch videos and streaming video programs online. Considering the fact that online videos have only recently become available to many viewers in the last decade or so, this is an alarmingly high figure, and it is easy to see why some people may believe TV sets will soon be obsolete. This number, however, includes those who watch an occasional video on YouTube, Facebook or other social media sites. Furthermore, many people watch both online videos and their TV set on a regular basis, so there is some overlap within these numbers.

Actual Viewership
While analyzing how many people watch traditional television programming may be insightful, what may be a more accurate figure to analyze is the actual time spent viewing traditional TV sets and online videos. In 2011, Neilsen estimated that the typical American viewer watched almost 33 hours of traditional TV programming each week. In that same year, American viewers watched less than 30 minutes of online videos per week.

However, it is likewise important to note that some online video services estimate much higher viewership. For example, NetFlix estimates that its viewers spend approximately 10 hours per month watching online videos, and some of these viewers are substituting their time that was spent watching traditional TV programming with TV watching NetFlix shows and videos instead.

The Evolution of TV
The fact is, however, that online videos and traditional television can co-exist. Many people enjoy watching high-quality video on their televisions in the comfort of their home, but streaming video may be more commonly used on mobile devices like smart phones and laptop computers. However, even streaming video can be used in conjunction with a traditional TV.

For example, Hulu is a streaming video service that you can access through devices like a Roku box, various gaming systems, a Blu-ray DVD player and more, and you can watch major network programming through the device. When used in this fashion, Hulu does not replace the television set but rather the cable TV or satellite TV programming service. Many other types of Internet-based programming can also be watched through your traditional TV set.

Technology is constantly evolving, and new innovations in entertainment for home and mobile viewing are also evolving rapidly. ?At the present time, it appears that Internet-based programming may be increasing in popularity in comparison to traditional TV programming. However, Internet-based programming as it is available today is unlikely to render the traditional television set obsolete.

US sues Wells Fargo over home-loan defaults

Shannon Stapleton / REUTERS

The federal government is suing Wells Fargo to recover hundreds of millions of dollars in FHA-insured loan defaults.

By NBC News wire services

NEW YORK???The U.S. government has sued Wells Fargo Bank in New York, blaming the nation's largest originator of home mortgages for thousands of loan defaults over the last decade.?

A civil mortgage fraud lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Tuesday seeks to recover hundreds of millions of dollars that the Federal Housing Administration, which insured the loans, had to pay out after borrowers defaulted.

The lawsuit charges San Francisco-based Wells Fargo with falsely certifying that its loans met the standards necessary to be eligible for government insurance. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says the bank's plan to reward employees for the number of loans they approved "was an accelerant to a fire already burning."

Bharara's office has brought similar cases in the past year, including one against Citigroup Inc unit CitiMortgage Inc, which settled the case for $158.3 million in February, and against Deutsche Bank, which paid $202.3 million in May to resolve its case.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn brought the biggest such case, against Bank of America Corp's Countrywide unit, which agreed in February to pay $1 billion to resolve the allegations.?

Wells Fargo & Co. has denied the allegations and is promising a vigorous defense.?

Types of Auto Insurance Coverage - Shoes on Wrong

State Farm Chesterfield Mo We see more cars on the road each year. This can lead to a higher possibility of a car accident. The difference between a small aggravation and large obstacle can be car insurance. But why is insurance required by law and just how much do you need? Coverage requirements vary by state/province, but usually include the following: Liability: Pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car collision, including property damage and injury. Bodily injury damages can include medical fees, and lost wages. Property damage can refer to damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your legal fees if you are sued. State laws usually mandate minimum amounts of liability insurance, but larger amounts can be purchased and are extremely helpful. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury insurance is mandated in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. The minimum amount of personal injury protection is usually set by the state. Medical Payments: This type of coverage can be purchased in states that are not considered no-fault and will pay regardless of who is responsible for an accident. If this type of coverage is purchased, the insured person will receive payment for necessary medical or funeral costs. Collision: Damages that occur from a car accident will be paid for under this type of insurance. Comprehensive: Applies if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by something other than an accident, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Too many drivers are ignoring the law by driving without owning the proper amount of auto insurance. This insurance will cover you if one of these irresponsible drivers hit you. Under-Insured Motorist: Many drivers have liability insurance that can?t pay for all the expenses they are supposed to take care of. This type of insurance covers you from those drivers. Other policies, such as car rental, are also available. Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on multiple factors, including: *Your selected coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status * The place where you live Many people don?t want to pay for car insurance, but it is honestly something you don?t want to live without. Review your needs, research your options, and with the guidance of your insurance agent, make the decision that best suits you.
