Can Red Bulls finally run the table?

Each day from now until the beginning of Major League Soccer?s 18th season, we will preview one Eastern Conference team and one from the West. First kick is March 2.

No. 3 in the East is the New York Red Bulls:

Significant additions and subtractions: In a trade with Real Salt Lake the Red Bulls got a reliable, hard-working scorer in Fabian Espindola and one of the league?s elite center backs in Jamison Olave. The club also added Brazilian veteran Juninho to boost the attack. (There are lots of Brazilian Juninhos out there; this is the Red Bulls? Juninho.)

The most newsworthy change is Rafa Marquez?s departure; if anything goes wrong this year, we can no longer blame the former Mexican international. (And that was typically the first stop along the blame train.)

Also moving out of Red Bull Arena is Sebastian Le Toux, who is back in the venue of his best success, Philadelphia. And Kenny Cooper was traded to Dallas, taking his team-leading 18 goals with him. The team also purged a few mid- to high-salaried veterans, like Jan Gunnar Solli and Teemu Tainio.

Strengths: No MLS roster looks more promising; back to front the Red Bulls have talent and options. Guiding them is now Mike Petke?s job, and the players seem to have connected with the longtime club figure ? Petke was a former Red Bulls player and then assistant coach ? in a way they never did with Hans Backe, who was fired last fall after three seasons in charge.

Petke hopes to get the best of his talented collection of attackers through a loosely structured attack, where interchange is encouraged in what he says will sometimes look like a 4-4-2, other times a 4-1-3-2, a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3.

Goalkeeper Ryan Meara, moving toward a possible Rookie of the Year honor last year before a late summer injury, and Luis Robles give Petke two terrific choices in goal. And speaking of choices, Heath Pearce is in the league?s top half of center backs, but probably top five in left backs. That kind of flexibility can only help as Petke builds the match-day lineups.

The central midfield will involve some ordering of Dax McCarty (rewarded with a new contract for that fantastic 2012 campaign), longtime EPL veteran Tim Cahill, Juninho and Thierry Henry.

Pressure points: The club has never won a major trophy, a fairly noticeable black eye for the team representing Major League Soccer?s largest media market. As ?pressure points? go, that?s a pretty substantial one, and an ongoing issue around Red Bull Arena. No one is more aware than Petke, a fan favorite in his playing days and the club?s all-time leader in appearance with 169 in league matches.

The trick with Olave is keeping him healthy enough that he justifies that relatively high salary for an MLS center back; Olave has averaged about 24 starts over the last five years, and he never quite looked the same after a hamstring injury last summer.

Henry has plenty of talent around him to provide some relief here and there, and he?ll certainly need it. (Plus, Henry doesn?t like playing on artificial turf.)

source: Getty Images

Difference maker: Henry turns 36 in August, but he still looks up for the job. The former French international (and league?s highest-paid player) supplied 15 goals and 12 assists last year, which are league MVP-worthy numbers. Plus, he never seemed to click between the white lines with Cooper, so the on-field chemistry with fellow attackers will presumably improve in 2013.

We can be 100 percent sure that Henry can still manufacture some very special moments; some of his goals over the last two years have been absolute beauties.

Potential breakout player: The club has three starting-quality left backs in Pearce, Roy Miller and Conor Lade. So we?ll see how much Lade can get on the field. ?Sooner or later, the talented, hard-working left back will get the chance to show why a player like Henry spent so much time talking him up last year.

Bottom line: There is a lot of pressure on Petke, 37, to find his feet quickly in this, his first professional head coaching assignment. Assuming he keeps the Red Bulls bus properly in lane, there is zero reason to believe they cannot challenge for the Eastern Conference crown. The roster is well-constructed throughout and blessed with difference makers at the top, even if a couple of them tend?to be on the brittle side.

(AP) ? The nation's most powerful politicians honored Rosa Parks on Wednesday by unveiling her statue in a permanent place in the U.S. Capitol. President Barack Obama praised Parks as an enduring reminder of what true leadership requires, "no matter how humble or lofty our positions."

Parks became the first black woman to be depicted in a full-length statue in the Capitol's Statuary Hall. A bust of another black woman, abolitionist Sojourner Truth, sits in the Capitol Visitors Center.

"We do well by placing a statue of her here," Obama said. "But we can do no greater honor to her memory than to carry forward the power of her principle and a courage born of conviction."

The unveiling brought Obama, House Speaker John Boehner and other congressional leaders together in the midst of a fierce standoff over automatic spending cuts set to go into effect on Friday.

Setting that conflict aside, Obama and Boehner stood on either side of a blue drape, tugging and pulling in opposite directions on a braided cord until the cover fell to reveal a 2,700-pound bronze statue of a seated Parks, her hair in a bun under a hat, her hands crossed over her lap and clasping her purse. Obama gazed up at it, and touched its arm.

At the same time across the street, conservative Supreme Court justices voiced skepticism about the relevance of the Voting Rights Act, one of the major legislative victories of the movement to which Parks devoted her life.

Parks' civil rights movement colleague Jesse Jackson, whose son former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. sponsored the bill to place Parks' statue in the Capitol, said Parks "fought her way into history," and on three occasions, took literacy tests required of blacks who wanted to vote. She passed all three, Jackson said.

Parks' statue is positioned between those of suffragist Frances E. Willard and John Gorrie, considered the father of refrigeration and air conditioning. Boehner, R-Ohio, pointed out that Parks' gaze seems to fall directly onto a statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy.

"Here in the hall, she casts an unlikely silhouette ? unassuming in a lineup of proud stares, challenging all of us once more to look up and to draw strength from stillness," Boehner said.

Parks died in 2005 at age 92. Dozens of her family members, many of them nieces and nephews, attended Wednesday's ceremony and said they were pleased to see their ancestor honored.

"Racism is a continual struggle," said Zakiya McCauley Watts, 28, of Detroit. "We have the laws, but we have to have the mindset to back that up. People see all types of injustice happening and no one is doing anything about it," Watts said.

Watts' cousin Faye Jenkins, 28, of Cincinnati, Ohio, said she volunteers with inner-city youth providing counseling, helping teenage moms and working with the homeless. She said the statue of Parks will tell the younger generation "to always just do the right thing."

On Dec. 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white man in segregated Montgomery, Ala. She was arrested, touching off a bus boycott that stretched over a year.

Her act of disobedience, and the masses of protesters who walked for months on end rather than break the boycott, are the reason "that I stand here today," the president said.

"It is because of them that our children grow up in a land more free and more fair, a land truer to its founding creed," Obama said. "And that is why this statue belongs in this hall ? to remind us, no matter how humble or lofty our positions, just what it is that leadership requires."

Some at the event echoed Obama's sentiment.

"The struggle goes on. The movement continues. The pursuit is not over. To honor Rosa Parks in the fullest manner each of us must do our part to protect that which has been gained," said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C.

Dorthula Green, 58, took an early train from New Haven, Conn., to join a line of ticketholders waiting in the Rotunda to see the statue on its debut.

"When I heard that this was happening, I said, 'I gotta be here,'" Green said. "I grew up in South Carolina. I knew the history and the kinds of things she went through."

Maks isn't 'Dancing With the Stars' in season 16

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is taking season 16 of "Dancing" off.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

When "Dancing With the Stars" unveiled its season 16 lineup Tuesday morning, one very popular pro was not included: ballroom bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Rumors had surfaced in the days prior that Maks wouldn't be participating in the show this upcoming season, and Tuesday, he confirmed the news to TODAY.com.

"I just want to set the record straight to all of my amazing fans that I will unfortunately not be returning for this season of 'Dancing With the Stars,' " he said in a statement. "I?ve been a pro dancer on the show for about seven years now and am eager to explore other opportunities that have been made possible because of 'Dancing With the Stars.' I'm going to take this time to?dive into producing and acting, while fulfilling my sponsorship obligations. ?

"A big thank you to all of my fans for your never-ending support. I also want to thank the entire cast and production of 'Dancing With the Stars.' "

"We frequently rotate the professional dancers, so it is not unusual for them to rest a cycle,? ABC said of Maks taking a break. "We appreciate each of our dancer's dedication to the show, so this is a very difficult decision. Anna (Trebunskaya), Chelsie (Hightower), Maks and Louis (Van Amstel) continue to be a part of the?'Dancing With the Stars'?family."

This isn't the first time the passionate dancer, who joined "DWTS" in season two, has taken time off from the show. He took season six off after finishing second with Mel B. in season five.

Maks, who has always stood up for his partners on the show when he felt they were unfairly critiqued, has famously sparred with judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba for several seasons. In season 13, he even told head judge Len during a critique of partner Hope Solo that he should retire, and cursed Carrie Ann backstage to reporters.

Though the Ukranian pro is taking time off to pursue other interests, the ballroom won't be Chmerkovskiy free. Maks' little brother, Val, is returning for his fourth season, and is paired with teen Disney star Zendaya.

"Dancing With the Stars" kicks off on March 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

MasterCard announces MasterPass digital banking service, gives Australia and Canada first dibs

MasterCard's been working on new-era payment systems for sometime, but now the credit corporation looks set to move past its PayPass project and roll out a service that's properly ready for the masses. By way of MasterPass, MasterCard will look to build upon what it gathered from previous efforts and use those learnings in its quest for success, with the firm being quite confident that by securing the right merchants and technology partners, it can turn the "promise of a digital future" into a reality. Furthermore, MasterCard says the MasterPass experience will be a seamless and secure one, making it easy for consumers to initiate transactions "from wherever they are" and with "any device." -- and that includes support for a variety of check-out methods, such as QR codes and, of course, NFC. Those in Australia and Canada can expect MasterPass to debut in their area next month, while US and UK folks will have to wait until later this spring and summer, respectively.

The Walking Dead, Season 3

1361491119720 Merle Dixon, avid reader

In Slate's The Walking Dead TV Club, Chris Kirk will IM each week with a different fan of the show. This week, he discusses ?I Ain?t a Judas? with Tim Surette, who reviews The Walking Dead for tv.com.

Chris Kirk: The final moments of ?Home? made me think the show was deliberately separating Rick and the Dixon brothers from everyone else, but as ?I Ain?t a Judas? opens, we see him and the brothers with the rest of the group trying to figure out their next move.

Tim Surette: I had figured the zombies in the courtyard would have been a bigger deal, but I guess Rick and the Dixons snuck in the back door.

Chris: However Rick found his way back, Hershel has had enough of his dillydallying and is putting his stump down: "Get your head clear. And do something!" In your review of "Home," you called Crazy Rick ?boooooring.? Fortunately Hershel's tough love and the high stakes of the situation seem to snap Rick back to reality, at least for this episode.

Tim: Anything to put Lori, ghost or hallucination or whatever, to rest. And Hershel's absolutely right. Rick can't go off to the mental Camp David while his people burn. I thought this episode started off great.

Chris: In Woodbury, Andrea suggests she go to the prison to talk things out, but the Governor refuses to give her a car. Why hasn?t the Governor collected her head for a new wall?

Tim: That is the big mystery of Season 3. As far as Andrea being part of his plan anymore, I don't see it. If anything, he should be scooting her out the door. Oh, and he should keep sharp objects away from her.

Chris: Let's talk about the Merle-Hershel relationship budding back in the prison. Hershel sits down with Merle and recites a Bible verse: "And if your right hand offends you, cut it off. Cast it from you. For it is profitable that one of your members should perish and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell." I expected Merle to crack some sour joke about Hershel's religiosity, but instead he shows himself to be a devout man himself when he completes the verse, cites it as Matthew 5:30, and remarks that "Woodbury had a damn fine library." There's more to Merle than his flagrant racism and sibling loyalty. Bibliophilia?

Tim: One of the problems I've had with these last two episodes was the abundance of unnecessary conversations, but this one was a good one. It showed a lot of character from both men. But what I liked most about that conversation was Merle explaining what kind of man the Governor is: the kind of man who would keep his biggest enemy alive the longest so he would witness the slaughter of his friends.

Chris: In their own private one-on-one, Carol tells Daryl not to let his brother bring him down. The next time Merle rips off Daryl?s shirt, expect a ?Carol? to appear in elegant cursive along his back.

Tim: Someone needs to crack a champagne bottle and send it on its way! But I honestly wonder if Daryl is relationship material at all. And won't someone think of Daryl's insane fans? Wouldn't they be heartbroken that their man is off the market? If I were Carl, I might tell those two love birds to stop making goo-goo eyes at each other and strap some more pallets to the fences. What good is a filthy prison mattress and a willing partner if you're dead?

Chris: Well if Daryl goes the way of Axel, fans will still have Milton. The Governor secretly tells the geek to help Andrea get to the prison. The two are capturing a guardian zombie when they encounter Tyreese's group.

Tim: Let's not forget about that amazing curb stomp Andrea gave that one walker. Between Glenn's boot stomp, the Subaru Outback guillotine back door, and Andrea going American History X on that poor zombie, we've had three fantastic zombie kills in a row.

Chris: Andrea presses on, and Milton leads Tyreese's group to Woodbury, where they divulge information about the Grimes group to an extremely friendly Governor. The Governor seems fascinated with Rick?even more when he learns that Rick is a little mad himself. Does he see a kindred spirit in Rick, a fellow resident of Crazy Town?

Tim: The Governor is absolutely obsessed with Rick and seems to be having fun with it. The whole situation is a clusterfuck for everyone involved, and that's how it should be.

Chris: Andrea is right at the center of it. When she arrives at the prison, she receives a frigid welcome that turns colder when she raises awkward questions about Shane and Lori. Michonne reveals that the Governor sent Merle to hunt her down after she left Woodbury. Is Andrea finally convinced that the Governor is a bad guy?

Tim: The lights finally seemed to be flickering inside her head. But she never seemed fully swayed one way or the other when it came to both the Governor and Rick. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say she's 60/40 in favor of Rick's group and continuing to swing that way. Also, I can't tell if Laurie Holden is doing a good job or a bad job with giving us an indication of what's going on inside Andrea's head.

Chris: I'm not sure if I ever understand what Andrea is thinking or why. Why do you think she doesn't kill the Governor? Does she still believe this conflict is a big misunderstanding that she can somehow fix?

Tim: That's definitely part of it, she wants everyone to win. She's blind to good and bad, so she figures, "Hey, let's all have a kumbaya and chat this one out."

Chris: Is she in love with him?

Tim: Given what she knows about the Governor and his recent lies, I can't believe she's in love with him?not that I ever believed they were in love in the first place.

Chris: Perhaps she has eyes only for Milton. Thoughts on the final montage?

Tim: Tom Waits? ?Hold On? was an interesting choice. The Walking Dead uses actual music sparingly, and it isn't really consistent with the rest of the series, but it made it really feel like a television show. I'm on the fence about it. In any case, "I Ain't a Judas" was great. It really felt like the story moved forward, there were some gorgeous zombie kills?Tyreese with the hammer should go into the zombie-killing textbook?and Andrea finally got interesting. I'd call this a major win for Season 3 and a prime example of how good this show can be when it wants to. And with a handful of episodes left, I expect the rest of the season to maintain a high quality and cut down on the scenes of Beth feeding Judith.

Chris: And hopefully replace them with more splattering zombie heads for my own montage.

Maine man can whistle, but he must keep moving

(AP) ? A Maine man charged with disorderly conduct for his loud whistling in downtown Portland has reached a deal with the city ? he can whistle, but he can't linger in one spot.

Robert Smith, of Westbrook, has been cited by police twice in the past year after businesses complained. He pleaded guilty last summer and reached a deal with the city in which he can keep whistling as long as he's moving.

Smith tells The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/15e6AEN ) his whistling ? audible a block away ? is protected free speech and usually brings smiles.

City officials dispute the free speech argument.

Janis Beitzer, of the Portland Downtown District, understands why some business owners are upset with the whistling. She calls it "irritating," like playing a radio too loud.

Vatican blasts 'false' pre-conclave reporting

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican lashed out Saturday at the media for what it said has been a run of defamatory and false reports before the conclave to elect Pope Benedict XVI's successor, saying they were an attempt to influence the election.

Italian newspapers have been rife with unsourced reports in recent days about the contents of a secret dossier prepared for the pope by three cardinals who investigated the origins of the 2012 scandal over leaked Vatican documents.

The reports have suggested the revelations in the dossier, given to Benedict in December, were a factor in his decision to resign. The pope himself has said merely that he doesn't have the "strength of mind and body" to carry on and would resign Feb. 28.

On Saturday, a day before Benedict's final Sunday blessing in St. Peter's Square, the Vatican secretariat of state said the Catholic Church has for centuries insisted on the independence of its cardinals to freely elect their pope ? a reference to episodes in the past when kings and emperors vetoed papal contenders or prevented cardinals from voting outright.

"If in the past, the so-called powers, i.e., States, exerted pressures on the election of the pope, today there is an attempt to do this through public opinion that is often based on judgments that do not typically capture the spiritual aspect of the moment that the church is living," the statement said.

"It is deplorable that as we draw closer to the time of the beginning of the conclave ... that there be a widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions."

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi was asked how specifically the media was trying to influence the outcome; Lombardi didn't respond directly, saying only that the reports have tended to paint the Curia in a negative light "beyond the considerations and serene evaluations" of problems that cardinals might discuss before the conclave.

Some Vatican watchers have speculated that because the Vatican bureaucracy is heavily Italian, cardinals might be persuaded to elect a non-Italian, non-Vatican-based cardinal as pope to try to impose some reform on the Curia.

While Lombardi has said the reports "do not correspond to reality," the pope and some of his closest collaborators have recently denounced the dysfunction in the Apostolic Palace.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, for example, criticized the "divisions, dissent, careerism, jealousies" that afflict the Vatican bureaucracy. He made the comments Friday, the penultimate day of the Vatican's weeklong spiritual exercises that were attended by the pope and other officials. Ravasi, himself a papal contender, was chosen by Benedict to deliver daily meditations and on Saturday Benedict praised him for his "brilliant" work.

The divisions Ravasi spoke of were exposed by the documents taken from the pope's study by his butler and then leaked by a journalist. The documents revealed the petty wrangling, corruption and cronyism and even allegations of a gay plot at the highest levels of the Catholic Church.

The three cardinals who investigated the theft had wide-ranging powers to interview even cardinals to get to the bottom of the dynamics within the Curia that resulted in the gravest Vatican security breach in modern times.

Benedict too has made reference to the divisions in recent days, deploring in his final Mass as pope on Ash Wednesday how the church is often "defiled" by attacks and divisions from within. Last Sunday, he urged its members to overcome "pride and egoism."

On Saturday, in his final comments to the Curia, Benedict lamented the "evil, suffering and corruption" that have defaced God's creation. But he also thanked the Vatican bureaucrats for having helped him "bear the burden" of his ministry with their work, love and faith these past eight years.

The Vatican's attack on the media echoed its response to previous scandals, where it has tended not to address the underlying content of accusations, but has diverted attention away. During the 2010 explosion of sex abuse scandals, the Vatican accused the media of trying to attack the pope; during the 2012 leaks scandal, it accused the media of sensationalism without addressing the content of the leaked documents.

Fighting in Sudan's Darfur region kills 51: government

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Recent fighting between Arab tribes in Sudan's strife-torn Darfur has killed 51 people and wounded 62, state news agency SUNA said on Sunday, in the first official comment on fresh violence in the western region.

Conflict has raged in the vast arid region since mainly non-Arab tribes revolted against the Arab government in Khartoum in 2003, accusing it of political and economic neglect.

Violence ebbed from 2004 but has picked up again in recent months. Arab tribes, armed by the government to help quell the Darfur insurgency, have turned their guns on each other in battles for control of a gold mine and other resources.

Fighting broke out in January between the Bani Hussein and Rizeigat tribes over the mine in Jebel Amer in North Darfur, displacing 100,000 people, according to the United Nations.

A total of 51 people were killed during new fighting in the area of El Sireaf between the two tribes on Thursday and Saturday, North Darfur governor Osman Mohammed Kibir told SUNA.

He said the army had now restored order, adding that "criminals" on both sides were to blame for the new violence which tribesmen reported first this weekend.

In January, separate clashes between the army and a rebel group in central Darfur forced 30,000 to flee.

In 2003, Khartoum armed and unleashed Arab tribes to help put down the insurgency of African tribes. Human rights groups and the United Nations estimate hundreds of thousands of people died in the Darfur conflict. The government says around 10,000 people were killed.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and some aides to face charges of masterminding war crimes in Darfur. They deny the charges and refuse to recognize the court.

Events in Darfur are hard to verify as Sudan restricts travel by journalists, aid workers and diplomats. In January, authorities denied Reuters a travel permit to attend a government-sponsored disarmament conference in West Darfur.
