Police clear tents from Occupy site in Washington

Park Police officers in riot gear and on horseback converged before dawn on one of the nation's last remaining Occupy sites, with police clearing the grounds of tents that they said were banned.

Dozens of U.S. Park Police officers in riot gear and on horseback converged before dawn Saturday on one of the nation's last remaining Occupy sites, with police clearing the grounds of tents that they said were banned under park rules.

That move left large swaths of open space and raised questions about exactly what would remain of the encampment once the enforcement was over.

Still, police said they were not evicting the protesters. Those whose tents conformed to regulations were allowed to stay, and protesters remain able to demonstrate at the site at all hours provided they don't camp there.

The police used barricades to cordon off sections of McPherson Square, a park under federal jurisdiction near the White House, and checked tents for mattresses and sleeping bags and sifted through piles of garbage and other belongings. Some wore yellow and white biohazard suits to guard against diseases identified at the site in recent weeks.

Police by mid-day had arrested six people, including four protesters who refused to move from beneath a statute and two others for crossing a police line.

The National Park Service, which has tolerated the protesters for months and protected their First Amendment rights, has said it will give protesters notice if police decide to clear the park. Police on Saturday were careful to say they were not evicting the protesters or closing the park, but were instead stepping up enforcement of an existing ban on camping.

Regulations allow protesters to remain onsite at all hours with tents, though they are not allowed to camp out on blankets or other bedding materials. Police said tents that broke the rules would be seized and their owners threatened with arrest.

The park service had said it would start enforcing the ban last Monday, and though protesters had then braced for a confrontation, it wasn't until Saturday that police cracked down.

Some protesters said Saturday's enforcement amounted to eviction even if the police wouldn't admit it.

"This is a slow, media-friendly eviction," said protester Melissa Byrne. "We're on federal property, so they have to make it look good."

The officers poured into McPherson Square before 5:45 a.m., some on horseback and others wearing routine riot gear. As a helicopter hovered overhead, they shut down surrounding streets and formed neat, uniform lines inside the park.

The police initially turned their focus to dragging out wood, metal and other items stored beneath a massive blue tarp ? which protesters call the "Tent of Dreams" ? that had been draped around a statue of Maj. Gen. James McPherson, a Union general in the Civil War. Protesters agreed to remove the tent.

Later, in a lighter moment, Park Police used a cherry-picker to remove a mask of 17th-century English revolutionary Guy Fawkes that had been placed on the McPherson statue.

The mood turned more tense, with occasional shoving, in the afternoon as protesters complained that police were indiscriminately seizing tents.

The Washington demonstration is among the last remaining Occupy sites, enjoying special First Amendment protections by virtue of its location on park service property.

Dozens have been camped since Oct. 1 in McPherson Square, just blocks from the White House. Similar to the New York protesters, who strategically occupied a park near Wall Street to highlight their campaign against economic inequalities, the District of Columbia group selected a space along Washington's K Street. The street is home to some of the nation's most powerful lobbying firms.

The relationship with police has been generally peaceful, though a daylong standoff in early December over a makeshift wooden building led to more than 30 arrests. About five dozen protesters were later arrested during a mass demonstration that shut down K Street.

Democratic Mayor Vincent Gray initially appeared to support the protesters. But any enthusiasm by city officials waned amid reports of violent incidents and, more recently, a rat infestation.

Update for Google Docs app adds offline support, amps up tablet features (Appolicious)

Google has done an admirable job of providing web apps that lots of people use every day. Gmail is firmly ensconced as a leader in web-based email, Google Reader provides easy RSS feed access, and Google Docs allows users to create word processing documents in their browser windows and share them with other users.

As Google?s Android operating system has picked up in popularity, the search company has created mobile app versions of its web services. The Android version of Google Docs has so far been somewhat underwhelming, but over time, Google has pushed out more and more updates to increase the functionality of the app.

The latest update to Google Docs brings lots of the features enjoyed by web users to its mobile counterparts. For one, the tablet experience of Google Docs has been reworked to be more robust and easier for users. The primary change for tablets is a new layout that makes swiping through document quick and intuitive, giving users more control over what they?re looking for and taking advantage of the larger screen space afforded to Android tablets.

Another major change is probably one of the most requested for Google Docs: offline mode. That allows users to tag certain files and save them to a mobile device?s local storage. Since Google Docs is web-based, normally users need an Internet connection to stream documents to their devices or computers. Saving is also done on Google?s servers automatically. With offline mode, users can save documents for when they can?t access the Internet, then upload changes when they get back to a Wi-Fi connection. PC and Mac users have long enjoyed offline mode capabilities, and now mobile users get the benefit of it, as well.

Google Docs also enjoys some mobile-only features that make it a handy thing to have on-hand no matter what device you?re carrying. Using your smartphone or tablet?s built-in camera, you can take a photo of a document and Google Docs will convert it to editable text in the app ? effectively scanning it and making it available instantly. The app also taps into your Contacts list on your device, making sharing documents with most anyone you know a snap as well.

Like all of Google?s apps, Google Docs is free in the Android Market. If you intend to use your mobile devices for word processing work, it?s an app you?ll want in your library, especially now that Google has optimized it for tablets.

Washington Gay Marriage: State Senate Voting On Same-Sex Marriage Proposal

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Washington state Senate is set to take a crucial vote Wednesday on a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage.

The bill has narrow support in the Senate, but is expected to pass because supporters have secured 25 "yes" votes ? the minimum required for approval. Five senators, two Democrats and three Republicans, have not indicated how they will vote.

If passed by the Senate, the measure moves to the House, which has enough votes to pass the bill by a more comfortable margin. Also, Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire supports the measure and said she will sign it into law, which would make Washington state the seventh state to approve gay marriage.

The bill's sponsor, Democratic Sen. Ed Murray of Seattle, still cautioned, "Nothing is done until it is actually voted on."

The Senate vote Wednesday is expected to come in the late afternoon or early evening.

The Senate Rules Committee voted Tuesday to advance the measure for a vote by the full chamber with Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, president of the Senate, saying that he has emphasized tolerance and diversity at state schools for decades, which would make it "hypocritical for me to not support this bill."

"For me, this is not a religious question," said Owen, a Democrat. "It's a legal question."

The committee advanced the bill on a 14-7 vote, with seven of the eight Republicans on the committee in opposition. Sen. Cheryl Pflug, R-Maple Valley, voted to advance it. She is one of two Republican senators who have said they will support the measure.

Opponents of same-sex marriage have already promised a referendum battle at the ballot if the measure becomes law.

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia.

Lawmakers in New Jersey and Maryland are expected to debate gay marriage this year, and Maine is likely to see a gay marriage proposal on the November ballot.

A referendum can't be filed until after the bill is passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gregoire. Opponents then must turn in 120,577 signatures by June 6.

Washington state has had a domestic partnership law since 2007 and an "everything but marriage" expansion of the domestic partnership law since 2009. Gay marriage bills were introduced in both the House and the Senate this year, and received their first public hearings this month.

___

The gay marriage bills are Senate Bill 6239 and House Bill 2516.
