Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, but it's also the easiest to cure if diagnosed and treated early. As we mark Sun Awareness Week, we take a look at the warning signs of skin cancer.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends monthly self-examinations plus a yearly skin exam with a doctor to look for the following signs:
1. A skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored.
2. A mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that changes color, increases in size or thickness, changes in texture, is irregular in outline or is bigger than 6 millimetres.
3. Any mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that appears after the age of 21.
4. A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed.
5. An open sore that does not heal within three weeks.
