There was a time when Tulsa defined itself by culture and sophistication, a time before the oil barons brought the wealth and fame to the region. The city?s first municipal theater was erected in 1914, and now the Tulsa Performing Arts Center takes its place. It opened in March of 1977 and was constructed with funds from both the public and private sectors. It is owned by the City of Tulsa, and its clients include local arts organizations, entertainment promoters, performers and the citizens of Tulsa and surrounding areas.
The construction of the Performing Arts Center came out of a 1973 bond issue. Civic leaders John H. Williams and Leta Chapman gave Tulsa voters a challenge: if the citizens would vote to fund half of the total cost for a new and modern performance space, Williams and Chapman would match that figure. The challenge was take by Tulsa voters with open arms, and the new center held its first concert on March 19, 1977. It was the Tulsa Philharmonic and jazz great Ella Fitzgerald. Not a bad way to kick off a new theater!
Now the theater puts on numerous spectacular music concerts, plays, musicals, dance performances, and art exhibits. Some upcoming summer shows to look forward to include Tony Award winning musical Jersey Boys, legendary musical Gypsy, the hilarious Avenue Q, and Trio Spiritoso just to name a few.
The Tulsa Performing Arts Center is located at 110 East 2nd St. in Tulsa. Parking for the theater is available on the east side of the building bordered by Detroit and Cincinnati Avenues and Second and Third Streets. All parking lots around the theatre are independently owned so pricing may vary.
