Samsung edges past Apple in US smartphone satisfaction study, but reverse is true in Korea

Samsung Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S

What a difference a year makes. Apple topped American Customer Satisfaction Index's smartphone rankings back in 2012, but Samsung has taken the lead in 2013 by a slim margin. Owners responding to ACSI's national survey gave an 84-point score to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II, putting the two Samsung phones just past the 82-point iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. Researchers haven't explained the changing attitudes, although they add that the Galaxy S 4 and other newer phones didn't ship in time to count. It's at least clear that the American sentiment doesn't extend worldwide -- ACSI notes that South Koreans ranked the iPhone 5 higher than the Galaxy S III despite Samsung's home turf advantage. Apple also maintains the lead in ACSI's device-independent scores at 81 points to 76, although Samsung is quickly catching up. It's safe to say that neither smartphone maker can afford to relax.

Zimbabwe goes to the polls to elect president

National presidential and parliamentary elections open today

Written by Jermaine Haughton/> 31/07/2013 11:50 AM

VOTERS: Two women make their decision at the polls this morning (PA)

ZIMBABWEANS ARE voting today in the country?s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Election observers have already accused organisers of misconduct, irregularities, and fraud.

The presidential elections will pit incumbent Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai against each other.

If Mugabe and his Zanu-PF are defeated, the 89-year-old has vowed to step down after 33 years in power.

SELF VOTE: Morgan Tsvangirai at the polls (PA)

However, Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change has alleged that Zanu-PF has doctored the electoral roll, a charge it has denied.

There has been an uneasy coalition government between Zanu-PF and the MDC since 2009, after a deal was made to end the deadly violence which resulted from a disputed presidential poll result in the previous year.

Map on Fatah's Facebook page shows Palestinian flag over Israel and PA areas

PA depicts a world without Israel
The Palestinian Authority makes no attempt to educate its people towards peace and coexistence with Israel. On the contrary,?from every possible platform it?repeatedly rejects Israel's right to exist, presents the conflict as a religious battle for Islam, depicts the establishment of Israel as an act of imperialism, and?perpetuates a picture of the Middle East, both verbally and visually, in which Israel does not exist at all. Israel's destruction is said to be both inevitable and a Palestinian obligation.

The following description of Israel's founding in a Palestinian schoolbook represents the dominant dogma about Israel:

This official PA map of "Palestine??was broadcast on PA TV in September 2011. The map includes both the PA areas and all of Israel (excluding the Golan Heights) wrapped in the Palestinian flag - a symbol of Palestinian sovereignty over the whole area - and has a key through it, symbolizing ownership. Similar maps?presenting all of Israel as "Palestine" appear in Palestinian schoolbooks and are shown regularly on PA TV.

"Palestine" replaces Israel
The Palestinian Authority paints a picture - both verbally and visually - of a world in which Israel does not exist. Children?s educational TV teaches that Palestine currently is a "state" (Arabic "dawla" = state) covering 27,000 sq. km - i.e., an area that includes all of Israel (the entire West Bank and Gaza Strip total only 6220 sq. km). Moreover, all Israel?s cities and infrastructure are referred to as "Palestinian": ?Palestinian ports ... [are] Haifa, Jaffa, Ashkelon, Eilat, Ashdod, and Gaza". [PA TV (Fatah), Sept. 1 2008]. Maps provide visual reinforcement?for this perception: Israel does not exist on any map; its area is marked as "Palestine." Maps showing the entire area of Israel covered with the Palestinian flag are routinely displayed at official PA events.

This educational documentary, depicting all parts of Israel as ?Palestine," has been broadcast repeatedly on PA TV (Fatah) from 2007 ??Oct 1, 2010:

?The West Bank and Gaza have another section in Palestine which is the Palestinian coast that spreads along the [Mediterranean] sea, from ?Ashkelon in the south up to Haifa, in the Carmel Mountains. Haifa is a well-known Palestinian port. [Haifa] enjoyed a respected status among Arabs and Palestinians especially before it fell to the ?occupation? [Israel] in 1948. To its north, we find Acre. East of Acre, we reach a city with history and importance, the city of Tiberias, near a famous lake, the lake of Tiberias [Kinneret- sea of Galilee]. Jaffa, an ancient coastal city, is the bride of the sea, and Palestine?s gateway to the world.?

Midterm Elections Could Be Poised for a Wave. But Which Party Would Stay Afloat?

As I mull over the 2014 midterm elections, I have been thinking along two lines. First, is this going to be a ?micro-election,? a Tip O?Neill-style ?all politics is local? election? Or will this be more of a ?macro-election,? a wave election that pushes forward the candidates of one party and pulls down the other party?s candidates? If it?s a wave election, which party will be the beneficiary and which the victim? Will we see a wave like those that benefited Democrats in 1958, 1964, 1974, 2006, and 2008, or one like those that helped Republicans in 1966, 1980, 1994, and 2010? In those kinds of wave elections, it was as if the Star Wars ?force? was with one side?s candidates, winning elections that normally wouldn?t have been won, and was against the other side, defeating candidates that normally would have won, or won more easily.

A micro-election is the more normal outcome, in which each individual House, Senate, and gubernatorial election is stovepiped, dependent upon the voting patterns and history of that district or state; the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates and campaigns; money; local issues; and other factors. If 2014 turns out to be more of a wave election, this outcome would involve a more overarching, nationwide dynamic. Will Republican problems from 2012 simply persist into 2014? Is it possible that the Republican brand remains damaged among minority, women, and self-described moderate voters, and that the strongest GOP contenders decline to run in key races (or if they do choose to run, that they still won?t win their primaries)? Or will we see the kinds of problems that normally plague second-term presidencies crop up again and with the traditional results? In five of the six post-World War II midterm elections that occurred during a president?s second term, the party in the White House has lost substantial numbers of House and/or Senate seats. A new president?s novelty has generally worn off by this time. The passion, energy, and focus is usually gone, first-term chickens come home to roost, or negative things happen to presidents in their second terms, be they unpopular wars, scandals, or economic downturns.

Several factors provide clues to determine which of these themes might end up dominating the 2014 election. I outlined five metrics to watch in the June 4, 2013, ?Off to the Races? column: presidential job approval, consumer confidence, attitudes toward the Affordable Care Act, favorable and unfavorable attitudes toward the Democratic and Republican parties, and finally, the generic congressional ballot test.

Although it is far too soon to make any conclusions about what kind of election we will see in 2014, with just over 15 months to go before the midterm balloting, today?s environment seems to suggest that both of the overarching dynamics described before could take place. Republicans have made no progress in improving their party?s standing with the electorate overall, or for that matter with minorities, women, young voters, and those self-described moderates. Social and cultural issues continue to plague their party among many young and some women voters. Intransigence among conservatives in the party seems to be preventing the GOP congressional leadership from trying to lance the immigration boil. Even deeper cuts in discretionary domestic spending are providing considerable cannon fodder for Democratic media consultants, who are preparing ads for next year. Not to mention that a government shutdown would be considerably more likely to damage Republicans than Democrats.

On the other hand, voters increasingly seem to have hit the mute button on President Obama. They are no longer listening to him, and his approval numbers seem to be dropping by about a point every three weeks. This does not seem to be because of any of the so-called scandals that got Republicans so worked up during the winter and spring, but more because voters have a perception of Obama as a not particularly effective leader. They tend to give him points for having good intentions on most issues, but they see him as ineffectual. Add to that growing concern over the Affordable Care Act, with only a third of Americans telling pollsters that it will help the nation?s health care situation, and less than a quarter who believe that it will help their own family?s health care. While retiring Sen. Max Baucus referred to the implementation of the ACA as a ?train wreck,? other Democratic members are remaining silent. From what we can tell, members of the president?s party are experiencing growing anxiety as they go back to their states and districts and are confronted with constituents who are considerably less than enthusiastic about the new law.

Mush all these factors together, and there is a chance they just might cancel each other out. The combination could also simply create a turbulent situation that does not uniformly benefit either party but creates pitfalls for both Democrats and Republicans alike.

Mali: Nigerian troops withdrawal begins today

Published on July 31, 2013 by pmnews ????? No Comments

Nigeria will today begin withdrawal of some of its troops from Mali because they are needed back home, where the country is battling Boko Haram insurgency, spokesman of the defence headquarters, Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said in a statement.

It was not clear how many troops would be pulled from the west African nation, where Nigeria currently has some 1,000 troops.

?The defence headquarters will tomorrow (Wednesday) commence the withdrawal of some Nigerian troops from the Peace Support Operations in Mali,? it said.

Nigerian soldiers in Bamako

Nigerian soldiers in Bamako

?The troops are mainly those not accommodated in the structures of the newly formed United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). They are to join the ongoing internal security operations in the country.?

The action followed ?the rehatting and takeover? by the UN of the mission from African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA),? it stated.

?Some of the soldiers will be redeployed immediately,? it added.

Nigeria will sustain its commitment and contribution to the Mali operation in other forms, such as input of ?sizeable men and materials? to the mission, it said, without giving further details.

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, chair of the 15-nation west African bloc ECOWAS, told reporters earlier this month that the withdrawal was because Nigeria needed its soldiers back home.

?It?s because of the domestic situation,? Ouattara said after an ECOWAS summit in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

However, a military source had said troops would pull out because the country, which has the biggest military in west Africa, felt ?shabbily treated? under the new UN force in Mali.

A Nigerian commanded the previous African-led force in the country, but the UN mission is being headed by a Rwandan.

The UN mission integrates more than 6,000 west African soldiers into its ranks and is charged with ensuring security during and after July 28 elections in Mali.

It is to grow to 11,200 troops, plus 1,400 police, by the end of the year.

Nigeria approved the deployment of 900 troops with the capacity to increase to 1,200 under the previous African-led force.

Nigeria?s military has been stretched thin back home.

Bomb blasts late Monday ripped through a mainly Christian area of Kano, the largest city in the north, killing 24 people, an official said, and shattering a recent lull in insurgent attacks there.

The military blamed the attack on suspected members of Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.

Violence linked to an insurgency by the Islamist extremist group, mainly in Nigeria?s north, has left some 3,600 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces.

Ranking the 10 Worst Current Uniforms in College Basketball

Cincinnati didn?t even get the worst version of the deservedly maligned postseason outfits from Adidas. However, the Bearcats were the only team that actually wore the atrocious road version last season, so they get the bad fortune of standing in for the whole bunch.

The inexplicable striped shorts that look like giant fingerprints are the most obvious problem here, but turning Cincy?s usual red into a garish pink-orange is a crime in its own right.

The rest of the schools for which Adidas unveiled versions of these?UCLA, Kansas, Louisville, Notre Dame and Baylor?should seriously reconsider.

Then again, some of those programs have long since proved that they wouldn?t know a decent uniform if their fans were using it to shield their eyes.

Backstreet Boys

In a World Like This

BMG/Sony

Rating: 2.5 stars?out of 5

MONTREAL ? Hard to believe, when we speak glowingly of some rock band?s mega-platinum seller ? back in the day when that happened ? that the Backstreet Boys had a couple of nine-figure blockbusters in a row in the post-Nirvana/GNR era on their way to selling 130 million albums worldwide. It must take an abundance of unique character and personality to become so universally, globally appealing.

Or perhaps the opposite, which isn?t necessarily the insult it may at first appear. Someone has to appeal across all the lines, and for their 20th anniversary, BSB ? now all comfortably in their 30s or even 40s ? return with a slightly topical title, four years after This Is Us, hoping the fan base still has the emotional bra-straps to be gently fumbled with.

While there obviously isn?t much of a problem in holding onto your genre no matter what age you?ve reached, you?ll have to do some tweaking. You?re not 19 anymore. In a World Like This?s title track is built out organically from an acoustic guitar riff, with minimal treatment and a slap beat. Frankly, it?s an impressively mature blend of arena anthemics, boy band vocals and credible hook. Don?t get too used to it.

Because the inherent element that eventually rocketed BSB to global stardom ? after they broke here, by the way ? was a kind of appealing blandness. Not disturbingly sexy, not embarrassingly plangent, not overly melismatic with the vocal calisthenics, they had the pleasingly fused vocals, looks and polite R&B/new-jack chops to offset the putatively more ?street? NKOTB.

Much of this feels somewhat underplayed, which is likely the right way to go. The big Permanent Stain tries too hard with its oscillating strobe-keys, offset by the strikingly breezy and under-everythinged Madeleine. Even Show ?em (What You?re Made Of) is a less than Olympian anthem; then again, it?s dedicated to their own little kids. Love Somebody?s ?when you wake up / with no makeup? is bound to set some no-longer-teen hearts fluttering.

Make Believe is more like it ? a resoundingly epic march right in the middle of the album ? but it is the idly jaunty Trust Me that is the touchstone: an anodyne amalgam of breezy lover-boy vocals, slap beat, horns and throwaway boogie piano buried under it all. As they pull into the clubhouse turn, they lean in with the glistening One Phone Call, the attempted grinding raunch of Feels Like Home and the uplifting ending pledge of Soldier, but it?s Trust Me that remains: not formulaic so much as the perfect low-impact boyfriend you deserve, but probably not the one you need.

Podworthy: In a World Like This

Backstreet Boys perform Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Bell Centre, with Jesse McCartney and DJ Pauly D. Tickets cost $29.50 to $104. Call 514-790-2525 or visit evenko.ca.

For the Masters of commodities at JPMorgan, a sense of deja vu

By Jonathan Leff

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fifteen years ago, a boom in global commodity trading was underway, and JPMorgan was late to the game.

Trying to catch up with Wall Street rivals, JPMorgan recruited a young trader, Danny Masters. Within a few years, it had built a global platform that eclipsed its peers. At last it was a major player in markets from oil to metals.

Then it pulled the plug. Regulatory scrutiny in metals markets had tarnished its reputation; the gains from shipping oil around the world no longer seemed worth the risk.

On Friday, history repeated itself.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced it would try to sell or spin off its physical commodity trading assets and operations, dismantling an empire built over five years by commodities chief Blythe Masters, 44, ex-wife of Danny Masters.

The announcement came almost 15 years to the day after the bank said it would end its first big foray into raw materials, led then by Danny when the couple was still married.

The operations for sale now account for as much as two-thirds of the bank's $2 billion-plus commodity revenues. They include 72 metal warehouses, three power plants, oil contracts and hundreds of traders from Singapore to Houston.

What remains will be a more traditional derivatives and precious metals operation, not unlike what the bank had in the early 1990s, when J.P. Morgan & Co. hired Danny Masters to help break into the ranks of the "Wall Street refiners," banks like Morgan Stanley and Solomon Brothers that were driving growth of the modern oil market. His team became major players in the dynamic European crude market.

"For a year or two, there was nobody bigger than JP Morgan," said one senior industry executive in London.

Around the same time, JPMorgan was building up a large London base metals business, a new area for banks.

None of it would last.

In 1996, J.P. Morgan was named as one of at least four banks caught up in the Sumitomo Corp. copper trading scandal, when rogue trader Yasuo Hamanaka racked up $2.6 billion in unauthorized losses. Morgan, which had loaned money to the Japanese trading firm, was the only bank to be rapped by regulators for lax controls. It wound down the London desk by 1997 to focus on customer business, it said at the time.

In July 1998, a year after Masters was named to lead the global energy business, the bank announced plans to sell the 35-person trading team, a fraction the size of its current 500-plus commodities division. An executive said at the time that a buyer with a strategic focus on energy trading "was in the best interests of clients, employees and Morgan overall."

Six months later, it shut down the unit after oil slumped to $10 a barrel, discouraging potential buyers. In 1999, Danny Masters set up one of the first commodity-focused hedge funds. He could not be reached to comment for this story.

Cambridge-educated Brit Blythe Levett, who had interned at JPMorgan since 1987, had barely begun her career on the commodities desk when the bank launched its bold plan.

She married Danny before he joined JPMorgan, and left the commodities group before he started. She later won acclaim for helping create credit derivatives. In 2001, they divorced. Five years later, Blythe Masters returned to commodities.

She did not respond to email seeking a comment for this article, and the bank declined to make her available.

ROCKY RE-START

By 2004, oil prices were pushing past a record $50 a barrel, copper was $3,000 per tonne, and investment banks were again piling into commodities. Merrill Lynch, Barclays and Deutche Bank were gaining on Goldman and Morgan Stanley, which had enjoyed years of dominance.

JPMorgan saw "huge potential" in the business and believed it could compete with the two big rivals, says a person familiar with its commodities business at the time.

The bank hired Morgan Stanley's top power and gas trader, George "Beau" Taylor, to jump-start the effort. He beefed up the desk with big trades and doubled the energy team to 70 within a year. He said at the time he wanted to add more of "the proper rainmakers in the right seats."

The next year, the bank scored a coup when one client, hedge fund Amaranth Advisors, melted down after bad natural gas trades. JPMorgan and hedge fund Citadel took over Amaranth's trades and earned an estimated $725 million on that deal.

But the business Taylor built lacked a large base of customer flow and produced volatile results, including a sizeable loss in the first quarter of 2006, although annual results were strong, according to former employees.

In March 2007, JPMorgan Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon told analysts the bank had "not had the level of earnings stability that we would have liked in energy." Value at risk in commodities, a measure of the bank's own money being wagered, more than doubled to an average $45 million a day in 2006; Goldman Sachs' VaR, by contrast, was $30 million.

As the bank refocused more on client-driven business, rather than proprietary trading, Taylor left for a rival months later.

This was a period of turmoil in the trading business. Dimon restructured the foreign exchange and commodities groups three times in seven months. Blythe Masters, who had been the investment bank's chief financial officer since 2004, took over on a temporary basis in late 2006 and then, in mid-2007, was formally named to run the commodities group.

TOP OF THE WORLD

The following year would mark the start of an acquisition spree that would transform the bank. But it would still take years for Masters to get the business firing on all cylinders.

One of her first public appearance after taking over the group was before a Senate subcommittee to talk about JPMorgan's global environmental products trading division, and push for a U.S. scheme. The bank's role in the still-young carbon market was going to be "her thing," said one former employee.

"For the private markets to most effectively address the problem of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, which practitioners refer to as carbon, must have a price," Masters told lawmakers at the July 2007 hearing.

In early 2008, JPMorgan bought carbon offsetting company ClimateCare. In September, 2009, it paid $200 million to acquire UK-based EcoSecurities, which developed clean energy programs and carbon offsets as part of the Kyoto protocol.

But efforts to create a U.S. emissions trading scheme were collapsing by 2010, while the European Union's cap-and-trade system, the world's biggest, went into freefall amid a glut of credits and a dearth of confidence in new global curbs. ClimateCare's management took the firm private in 2011.

In the meantime, JPMorgan was doubling down on traditional markets. In the early days of the 2008 financial crisis, it took its first step back into physical trade, buying Bear Stearns, along with its power plants and large trading book.

The following year it bought UBS's global agricultural book and Canadian energy unit, a group that once worked for Enron.

The biggest deal came in early 2010. Royal Bank of Scotland, bailed out by the UK government, was forced to sell off the Sempra Commodities group it had bought a majority stake in just before the crisis struck.

In July 2010, Blythe Masters closed the $1.7 billion deal, acquiring a global physical oil trading platform with a history of big risks, and big rewards. It also had a premier base metal trading and warehousing division that traced its roots back to Metallgesellschaft (MG), the German enterprise that dominated the London market in the 1990s.

(For a history of the Sempra enterprise see: http://r.reuters.com/rez89t )

ON TRACK

That same year, JPMorgan suffered what Masters called a "rookie" loss in illiquid coal markets estimated to have cost the bank as much as $250 million. She was also enraged by the publication of an internal conference call on which she told the group's 600 traders that competitors were "scared shitless".

Some of the traders at Sempra had already been chafing at the more restrictive environment of a bank. In 2011, some of them followed their former bosses to a new trading house called Freepoint Commodities, backed by a private equity fund.

After these setbacks, the group seemed on track by mid-2012.

In April last year, Blythe Masters inaugurated the first educational program in the United States dedicated to broad commodity trading, at the University of Colorado. Its lab was filled with rows of trading terminals and premium data services.

She told CNBC at the time that JPMorgan expected client demand for commodity finance, risk management and trading to grow "very, very rapidly over the next couple of decades in fact. ... we are very excited about the prospects for growth."

Last July, JPMorgan clinched a deal that would make it the 11th largest U.S. oil importer: a three-year contract to supply crude and sell products from the 330,000 barrel per day in Philadelphia, the biggest on the U.S. East Coast. It was part of a wide-ranging financing deal that helped Carlyle Group buy the plant, saving it from closure.

The deal showed how the combination of "physical capabilities with our financial risk management and structuring skills" offered "unique differentiators," Roy Salame, head of global sales and structuring, told Energy Risk magazine in May.

UNRAVELLING

By the time JPMorgan was named Risk's "Oil and Products House of the Year" two months ago, however, things had already begun to sour behind the scenes.

The Federal Reserve, which for the past decade has allowed commercial banks to trade broadly in physical markets, from Middle East crude to power plant tolls, was looking more closely than ever at how banks were operating in these markets.

A "review" of its landmark 2003 decision, made public in an abrupt announcement last Friday, had in practice been underway for months as the regulator queried other banks on pending requests, according to a source who speaks to the Fed regularly.

The Federal Reserve has declined to comment on the review, or any discussion with any specific bank on commodities.

A Reuters report in early 2012 made it clear JPMorgan would probably have to sell off the Henry Bath operation. Even deeper questions arose that had forced the bank to review the future of the business.

In February, Michael Cavanagh, a co-chief executive of the corporate and investment bank, told investors that because of "changes in regulation, particularly around the physical side" it would be looking to "optimize" the commodities group.

The next month, the U.S. power market regulator told JPMorgan it was looking into allegations that JPMorgan manipulated power markets in the Midwest and California.

Pressure on the bank mounted last week, when a U.S. Senate banking subcommitted grilled experts over whether investment banks should be allowed to own warehouses and trade oil tankers, putting unprecedented scrutiny the sector.

On Friday, after announcing the bank's exit, a spokesman said simply: "We considered many different factors, including the impact of potential new rules and regulation."

Egypt's Morsi is in good health, says top EU diplomat after meeting

Mayhem in Cairo as tensions over former Mohammed Morsi supporters spill into the streets. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, Correspondent, NBC News

CAIRO ? Egypt's Mohammed Morsi is in good health and sends his best wishes to the outside world, European Union diplomat Catherine Ashton said Tuesday after a two-hour meeting with the deposed president.

The meeting, held at an undisclosed location, was Morsi's first known contact with foreign officials after his July 3 overthrow by the country's military.?

Islamist Morsi, who was elected by a narrow margin in June 2012 in the country?s first democratic vote, has been hidden from the public since he was removed in what his supporters - including the prime minister of Turkey - regard as a coup.?

His supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood movement have held numerous protests that have at times led to deadly clashes -- at least 100 people were killed on Saturday alone.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued an "emergency message" that said more demonstrations were planned Tuesday, including a march on the area containing the embassy itself. There were violent clashes near the embassy -- protected by police and soldiers as well as cement block walls -- on July 22 between supporters and opponents of Morsi.

Ashton went to Egypt in an attempt?to mediate a resolution to the impasse?between Morsi's supporters and the interim government installed by the military.

She said the deposed leader had access to television and newspapers when she visited him and was aware of developments in the country.?

?I've tried to make sure that his family know he is well,'' Ashton?told journalists following the meeting held Monday night.

She said she had a open and frank conversation with Morsi.

The officials said Ashton was also allowed to see Morsi's chief of staff Rafaa el Tahtawy and was able to walk around the facility.

"I will come back," she said at the end of her visit, according to Reuters, but she added it was up to Egyptian politicians to "make the right decisions."?

On Monday, she met Egypt's army chief and Defense Minister Abdel Fattah Sissi.

European Union via EPA

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton, meets with Egyptian army chief Abdel Fattah Sissi on Monday.

On Friday, Mena news agency reported Morsi would be detained for 15 days while a judge investigated allegations against him.?

Morsi?s family have accused the country?s military of ?kidnapping? him and said they would seek help from the International Criminal Court.

The army is responsible for Morsi?s "safety and security," his daughter Shaimaa told a news conference in Cairo.

Reuters contributed to this report.?

Avs' new goalie coach Francois Allaire sets his sights on revamping Varlamov

Francois Allaire left, talks with Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer. (David Cooper, Toronto Star)

Francois Allaire calls it something of a "back to the future" moment of his career.

As the new goaltender coach of the Avalanche, Allaire is on the same staff with the player, Patrick Roy, he coached for 12 years with the Montreal Canadiens. Allaire also is back to coaching another goalie, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, whom he played a major role in developing into one of the NHL's best netminders.

But can Allaire work the same magic for Avs No. 1 goalie Semyon Varlamov as he did Roy and Giguere? That, the 54-year-old goalie guru said, is his biggest immediate challenge.

"I think Varly is looking for a fresh start," Allaire said. "I think he's open to trying something else. He didn't feel he was going in the right direction. He wants to flush everything out and start fresh."

If Varlamov needs encouragement that Allaire can make him a better goalie, he need only look at the bench at his new coach, or at Giguere. Despite never playing in the NHL, Allaire is widely credited with improving Roy when he served as a coach with Montreal (1984-96), and Giguere when he coached at Anaheim (1997-2009).

When the Avs parted ways with former coach Kirk McLean and Roy was hired, one of Roy's first calls was to Allaire. The goalie coach had been out of the league since 2012 after a three-year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs ended badly, with cross words back and forth between him and the team. Roy didn't hesitate to bring him back.

"I was very lucky that I met him. I have no doubt in my mind that he was a huge help in my career," Roy said previously.

Said Giguere of his time with him in Anaheim, which included a Stanley Cup in 2007 and a Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003: "My career

was going nowhere. I immediately felt more confident. I revived my career with him."

Allaire doesn't divulge his secrets, but those who have played under him say he stresses constant repetition of fundamentals. He is known as very demanding, but with a track record of success.

Varlamov, who has had two mediocre seasons with the Avs so far, is his latest project.

"I want him to be comfortable. That's the main thing," Allaire said. "After that, I want him to understand I'm not coming from a different planet. It's the same stuff. We don't want him to change everything. I've met with him a few times already. One of my trademarks is I try to make sure guys are feeling good and keep it simple, create good routine, make sure the guy is happy coming to the rink. Then after that, look at the tape and then find their best strength and build around it. I'm not there yet with Varly, but I expect that to come."

Allaire's job is not full time, but he is likely to be around the team at least half the month. Working side by side with one of his former star pupils has him re-energized, he said.

"He's a guy I could tell an idea to and he might say: 'I like that. I'll try that in a game tonight.' " Allaire said. "Not too many guys can do that. A lot of guys don't have enough confidence in themselves, but Patrick could decide in a hurry. I think it's going to be a good environment with the Avs, with Patrick around. I feel really welcome by the organization."
