The gaming industry has reached milestones upon milestones starting from the day the 8 bit console was introduced in the market. Starting out with 8 bits of graphics and cheezy storylines, modern games have almost mimicked the real world with infinite storylines.
Another milestone in the gaming industry is when network gaming was introduced, fusing the concept of gaming with social networking. MMORPGs or Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games have made the physical world smaller bridging the gap between players from various corners of the globe speaking unfamiliar languages.
Online games broke the concept of video games as ?antisocial? because it allows several people to play together via the internet or LAN connection. The complexity of the hardware requirements is handled by dedicated servers and the terminals or PCs of the gamers. In essence, the actions among players across the web are handled by massive servers while the sound and graphics are handled by each player?s PC.
In the past, hardcore games only require top notch hardware specifications. But with multiplayer games, a fast internet connection is needed to transmit data coming from the servers. Usually, they require at least a broadband connection. For PCs, processors must at least have 1 Gig of RAM and core duo processors.
In a massive network, servers may be composed of several dedicated computers to do all of the real time computing for the graphics and gameplay. MMORPGS though need more powerful and faster servers. The computers of end users or players are called clients. We can say the in the heart of the network lies the server. During the game play itself, the server receives data from all clients, and throws back processed data to these clients. Let?s say a one player fires and arrow, another throws an axe, and a third blows fire. Each client sends the information to the server. The server reads all movements and sends them simultaneously to each client, which is sometimes called the ?state of world?. This way, real time movement is experienced by each player.
There are two categories when it comes to online games ? centralized server based and distributed server based. MMORPGs are what we mean by centralized server based games. The environment is never logged off or shut down as players come and go. The game continues regardless of your character. It is almost a replica of the real world.
On the other hand we have distributed server based games wherein a server is another PC linking other PCs in a specified game like those in shooting games or sniper games. Like Quake Arena or Counter Strike.
